Take the winding 9km drive through the hills to Wainui, it is worth it. Register at the main office, then take the second gate on your right, this area is set aside for casual campers: the main part of the camp is for organized groups. Here there is a pleasant tenting area surrounded by trees with some sites on the riverbank, where you can listen to the birds singing and the crickets chirping. It is serviced by a small number of facilities and a kitchen. There are three levels of camping and three power sites - you may need a long lead. The manager is Mike Linton.
